Hi Scotty

I’m a new view. I found you recently by doing research on my 2016 Toyota 4Runner I purchased recently. I owned a nothing but Isuzu Troopers the last 25 years. But my last faithful steed has gone to pasture. So I replace her with a 4Runner TRD Pro. But there are new sounds that I’m not accustomed too.

The one I’ve had the most concern about is a light tapping/ticking noise coming from the engine. A Toyota Dealer mechanic told me that it’s fairly common for these engines with 30k+ miles. He said these engines tend to get a varnish build up on the fuel injection and valves but it nothing to be too concerned about.

So my concern is, did the mechanics give me the right diagnostics? If so, then I’m wondering if there are ways to reduce the noise. I did add Lucas Oil for synthetic oil and it was noticeably quieter afterwards. Someone also said I could put Miracle Oil in engine and that would help remove the varnish. I also talked to a customer service guy for Toyota about it and he said using different oil might help too. He said his Tundra runs quieter on Valvoline synthetic oil. Right now I’m running Castro Synthetic Oil.

Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Darrell R.

Hi Scotty - here’s a weird one. I have a 2009 Ford Edge AWD. It misfires on me on with slight acceleration - especially on inclines. The check engine light never comes on and it’s not throwing any codes. Here’s the weird part. It doesn’t happen if I run premium gas but it comes back as soon as I switch back to regular unleaded. Any ideas?

Hey Scotty, I’m looking at a 2007 Lexus LS460 with 107k for around $9,000. How well made and reliable are these model Lexus? Let me know if you have any experience with these throughout your years of being a mechanic.

Hello Scotty, just want to know what would you choose between the three, 2004 BMW 318i, 2008 Toyota Camry or 2011 Hyudai Sonata? These 3 is on the same price so I want to know your opinion. Hope you can see this message :)

Hello Scotty, I just wanted to tell u that I took ur advice and I got a 2001 Toyota Corolla that I use as a daily driver to deliver in. I've put 20,000 miles on it with just a little fixing up in the last 7 months and it has never left me stranded. It had only 134,000 miles on it when I got it for $1,200.00. The car has already paid for itself, however it's a car that wasnt well taken care of and I'm thinking of getting a newer Toyota Corolla, Camry, or Prius. I dont want a hybrid after watching ur videos, lol. Which model and year would u choose, in my position? Also, thank you very much for helping people with wise advice when it comes to vehicles. An honest man, I can tell. Also, before I started watching ur videos, I bought a 2011 dodge ram with 135,000 miles on it. So far, I have found an exhaust manifold leak and some minor electrical issues. Thinking of selling it and either getting a Ford or Tundra. It seems u would advise me to do that now, before I start having problems. Kinda scary because I really like my truck, it's really awesome. I've also put 20,000 miles on my truck relatively trouble free, so far; lol.

Hi Scott, long time viewer, first time poster. I have a 2008 Acura MDX with 110k miles. I only get cold air on the passenger side of my SUV when i turn on the AC. The driver side will eventually get cold but i think that's because its recirculating the cold air being spit out by the passenger side.
Any idea what this could be?

Hey scotty I know that neutral dropping is horrible and would never do it intentionally. I was going 19 miles per hour when my kid kicked the clutch into neutral and I panicked and put it back into drive right away instead of coasting to a stop. I don't think I damaged anything other than my pride when I yelped. I just heard that honda transmissions arent the best but I really love my car please help.

Hi Scotty. Been watching your videos for a few years now.

I have an 03 VW Jetta. Took it to a shop to have the a/c looked at and well the mechanic applied 12v from the battery to the plug for the a/c compressor and now I have the epc light on along with 3 codes for the pedal/throttle position sesnor and 1 for the o2 sesnor. Car idles at 1200 rpms and has a dead throttle. Been told by other on forums that the ecu is fried. What do you think

Hey Scotty been subscribed and watching your videos for the last 2 years! I do have my first question for you.

I have an automatic 2017 honda civic hatchback sport with 24k on it. I was in drive going maybe 30 km/h and my passenger accidentally pushed the gear into neutral. I had my foot on the gas and it revved to around 4000 rpm for 2 - 3 seconds before I put it back to drive. I'm not sure what rpm it was before I put it back into drive. I don't think I felt any jolt but I still am a little worried. Just wondering what problems could show up and what signs to look for.

Hey Scotty what do you think of a 2003 C5 corvette, 50th Anniversary edition, manual tranny w/111k miles on it ?

2 owners: first owner had it for 9 years (averaged about 8k miles a year). 2nd owner for 7 years (averaged 5k miles a year).

Local Chevy Dealer is asking $12,565. KBB is showing $15k dealer retail in excellent condition. Car fax is showing front end accident in 2017. Car looks awesome, exterior (front bumper too) & interior is flawless. This wouldn’t be used a daily driver.

Hello Scotty, My Wifes 2016 Ford Explorer with 82K Had a recall on the Air Bag, ( The light stays on) Her extended warranty covers most but the Ford Dealership tells her it is not covered. It is a wiring harness or sensor. Tells her to wear a safety belt and ignore it? This car is the same one that the transmission fell out at 30K, It is in the dealership for the rear suspension link recall and faulty drive motor on the moonroof. Ford has a serious issue with paint on iron impregnated aluminum delaminating......Ford is not covering this issue. So who would buy a new one based upon this history?

Scotty I really need your input I have a 2011 ford flex 2wd 106,000 miles making a noise that sounds exactly like a bad wheel bearing but its not do you have any idea what it could be? I'm thinking could it be the differential in the transmission.

Hey Scotty! Big fan! I have a Chevy Colorado with the 2.8L Duramax, 6 speed automatic. It shifts very smoothly, but when I'm in the 6th gear, it will not downshift unless I give it some gas or do it manually. If I were to just let it glide in 6th gear with my foot off the pedal, it will not shift to 5th but relunctantly shift to 4th gear as it slows down. Why is this happening?

Scotty, I have a 1985 LTD crown Victoria. In the past when I had to get engine parts for the car I was told it was a police interceptor engine and they have always given me parts for that set up. When I looked up the years that they made the police interceptor cars I was dumbfounded to find that my cars VIN didn't match the information that indicated it to be one made with the police Interceptor setup. the engine according to the title is a 302. So how can I tell for sure what type do I have? or are the " Interceptor parts" better in the long run? Thanks Joe Matter.

Hi Scotty I just moved to Houston (westbury neighborhood) I have a 65 mustang fastback. I have a classic auto air a/c setup and most likely have a Freon leak. The ac is out of my wheelhouse. Do you take new customers? Or would you have any recommendations for a shop to take it to?

Hi Scotty. My Dad wants to give me his 1975 corvette. It’s been on and off the road since I’ve been around. Lately it’s off the road (15 years in his garage without moving) it drove in there after a corvette specialist ran through it and gave it a clean bill of health. The car has 75k miles and isn’t cosmetically in the greatest shape. He would let it go but only if it’s trucked to this higher end shop for new hoses, carb, fluids and tires. The owner told him between 3-4K to get the car rolling again. Is it worth the investment. I’m not the most handy but I know my way around enough to get it going on my own but he doesn’t want to give away a project! it has some cracked paint. Faded paint. It’ll never be flawless which I kind of like. I’m gonna drive it! I see them with a list of receipts for around $10-$12 dollars. Is this worth my time? I would keep it forever but are they reliable enough to last for awhile only being driven a few thousand miles a year?

Hey soctty my dad has a 97 jeep grand cherokee Laredo and if my dad drive his car often it will not want to start up with out pressing on the gas pedal multiple times or wont start up for a few days and when he drives the car it spits and sputters then sometimes die on him driving down the road or at a red light. And the strange part is it doesn't bring up any coverage at all. And the battery is brand new and the starters brand new the problem wont go away. Any idea to what the cause might be?

Good morning Scotty I have a 95 f150 with the 300 inline six with an m50d 5 speed transmission, I did a cab swap about 10 months ago left it parked for 6 months while i was on deployment and when I came back everything was working fine until about 2 days later my windshield wipers would try and work you'd hear the relay work and the wipers would move a little bit, then my high beam light would come on and so would both turn signal lights. Any power I apply to the heat would make the wipers extend fully but I would have to play with the switch to make them fully seat to where they should be. I replaced everything from the relay the turn signal stock and the wiper motor and it hasn't fix anything. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you Scotty!

Scotty,

I have had trouble with my RPM shuttering/ jumping slightly when I'm around 35-50MPH, when it is in last gear. The truck has 140,000 miles and I can't seem to find a mechanic to fix or pinpoint the problem. Below is a list of things that have been done that didn't work.

  • Mass Air flow sensor cleaned.
  • Throttle positioning sensor changed / throttle body cleaned.
  • Foot pedal replaced.

Recently, a mechanic told me I probably need to do a DOD delete...He seems to have more knowledge than the other I have been to. Is this worth trying? Do you have any suggestions? Also, I've had people tell me it could be in the torque converter, but transmission specialist said it isn't throwing any codes.. I'm desperate for answers.. Lastly, my truck drinks 5W-30 oil.. should i add lucas stbalizer

Scotty, I have a 2003 Ford Ranger 2.3... I was driving out of a stop light, went to shift from 3rd to 4th gear, and the clutch wouldn't move.
