Two totally different animals. The Miata is if you want a fun to drive roadster. There are plenty of them out there with low mileage because they usually aren't used as daily drivers. The Matrix, on the other hand, is a hatchback version of the Toyota Corolla that is less fuel efficient, noisier, and didn't perform as well as its sedan counterpart. The Matrix is much more practical than a Miata. But if you want something that's truly fuel efficient, look at a used Toyota Prius. Toyota makes no profit off their hybrids. If you want a Miata, get one with a stick. Mazda makes some of the best stick-shifts in the business.
