Hey Scotty! I’m having some issues with a 2006 Chevery Silverado 1500, it has 122k miles and it is a manual transmission. I recently ch aged out the spark plugs and ignitions wires while at i ch aged the carburetor cap to make it better, but instead it didn’t fix the misfire, I also noticed a strong scent of rich gas coming from the engine bay, would appreciate the help!

Hey Scotty, I got 2 questions as this is my first car. I have a 2006 Lexus GS300 automatic, 130k miles. I got my oil changed about a month ago and the oil is just fine (changed it bout 3 weeks ago) but the light recently started to pop up when I first start my car (it’ll say oil maintenance required soon) but dissappears befire I even start to drive off. And about a week ago it was really hot outside (like 108f) and I was going 80mph, whenever I was clicking on the gas at that point the RPM would shoot up to 6, and stay there (continue to go up if I held the gas) (this is also not a problem I have everyday, just a few times on those really hot days) my grandpa said my best bet is to change the transmission fluid. I contacted a mechanic In My area and he said changing the transmission oil might mess up my whole transmission and idk what to do. Should I get the transmission fluid changed, should I add more to it, or what. question #2 is what’s the most affordable way to add a decent amount of horsepower to it?

Hi , I am from Australia. What do You think about buying Honda Accord 2005 with 266km on it from a private, A$3000 which is roughly 2000$ USD?

Scotty, I am planning on getting a 2021 Lexus NX300 that only has only a Turbo inline 4 engine or a 2021 Toyota Venza that comes only in a hybrid and want to keep it forever but I know you have said that either turbo or hybrids can be problems as they get older as far as maintaining them. If you had to choose between the two engines, would you do the Lexus with the turbo or the Venza with the hybrid? Thanks

Hey Scotty

I just bought a 2003 Honda CRV 2.4L Automatic with 190k miles. It bounces on bumps and gives off clunky noises at low speeds or when turning. I also noticed a CV axle boot is ripped and leaking grease.

I only bought this car as a cheap beater to run pizza delivery for about a year. Can this Honda last that long with these worn parts or am I doomed to throw money into addressing these things?

Hi Scotty thanks for all the great videos, truly you possess amazing wealth of knowledge. I desperately need your help, I own a 2013 VW jetta 1.4 tsi EA111 CAVD engine, the car had been acting strange for the past 6 months or so cold starts will cause it to vibrate badly but when the rpm stabilizes at 730-ish the vibration goes away and car runs smoothly doing a scan using OBD11 picks up misfires on Cyc 1&4 but not enough to throw a check engine light so I replaced the spark plugs by myself during movement control order after which the car ran smoothly though OBD11 were still picking up misfires.

Managed to get it to the garage after 4 months back they found 2 coil connectors were broken that was replaced they also performed scans which didnt pickup any misfires they also ran a compression test twice and results were perfect. At this point I thought the problem was fixed but after 2 weeks found that my fuel consumption had deteriorated a little so I ran OBD11 again only to find out there were misfires but no fault codes or CEL baffled by this I got it back to the garage this time injector test were done along decarbonizing (walnut Blasting) too and still there were misfires at this point I thought it could be my cheap OBD11 I wasn't accurate and so left it.

Just a week ago while I was driving home car started shuddering like it was going to stall car went into limp mode so I drove it slowly back home check engine light flashed about 3 times then went off but the EPC light stayed on used the OBD11 and faults registered were P0300. P0301 and P0304. Engine misfiring on cyc 1 & 4. Tow it back to the garage and they recommend changing coil packs which solve that problem. However the cold start vibrations still occur and when the car idles you can feel an intermittent vibration from under the seat.

This time after 3 days of testing in the garage they recommend changing the engine at 6k without a concrete reason. I brought the car home still runs smoothly except when it idles and cold starts vibration. I would really appreciate any advise Scotty.

Thanks

JR

I have a 1990 Dodge Ram 50 Automatic trans and 180k miles. I have coolant in my oil and I have replaced the head gasket and the head looks good, it’s pretty clean for a 30 year old truck and I was wondering, where else could I be getting coolant in my oil from?

Hi Scotty, love your videos.

I just bought a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Ecodiesel from a friend. It has only 22000 miles on the clock and some power train warranty plus 6 years of added emissions warranty remains. The messed up recall campaign emissions firmware has been fixed and it runs better than new with better than 30mpg average on the highway and no hesitation.

I needed a car that’s flat towable behind my MotorHome, and has four wheel drive. Very few choices outside of Detroit, and my 100% reliable 2006 Acura MDX has 180000 miles is getting a bit old for a planned rv trip to Alaska.

My mechanic tells me it’s a good car, but social media flaks say it’s trouble, a money pit, and needs an illegal tune and delete, which I won’t do. I’m in California. What’s your take on this?

Tom

Ps. I really love your videos.

Hi Scotty,
I have a 2012 Chevy Cruze 1.8l manual transmission car. A couple weeks ago my upper radiator hose exploded, then my heater outlet hose. (It comes out of the firewall and v’s to the coolant tank and engine. Before it stopped running it said it lost oil pressure. I replaced the hoses, added new coolant. I’m in the process of having the oil changed as soon as possible. When you try and start it, it cranks but doesn’t turn over. I had the thermostat changed about 3 months ago. It has 185,000 miles (I’m the 3rd owner, the 2nd owner bought it with 10,000 miles, and used it as a work commuter) the codes are P0327, P00B7, and P0117. What should I check next?

Hi Scotty I purchased a 2017 Ford Fusion, automatic with 18000 miles. It was too good a deal to pass. I specifically went for the base model with the Mazda-derived 2.5 because I’ve heard very good things about that engine. My main concern is with the GM-Ford six speed automatic transmission. I haven’t heard much about it and I’m wondering if I should get the extended warranty on the car. Thanks!

Hi Scotty! I have a 2004 Honda Civic Lx automatic. It has thrown the map and iac codes as well as P0141. And recently the speed sensor code which we replaced not even an hour before. It revs high before shifting up. I cannot get it to go past 60-65. I’ve replaced the map sensor, transmission, cleaned the IAC, replaced speed sensor, air filter, fuel pump, as well as O2 sensors. I absolutely cannot figure what is going wrong with this car. Please help!

you probably dont have time for this but i am asking anyways...i'm retired, fixed income, and needing to replace my truck. I will be keeping the next one till i die. I will buy a one year old used one from a ford or toyota dealer. I know you like both trucks. If you were me would you get an f150 or a tundra? thanks, and if you say either then i'll just go for the best $deal.

Hi Scotty! I have a 2003 Mercedes Benz e320, 137k miles with an automatic transmission. Recently it has been over accelerating, so if i try to go anywhere over 25mph, it will shoot up to 30rpm and stay there. Went and checked under the car and the transmission fluid was leaking, fixed the leak and the transmission fluid level is now normal, but I still have the issue.

Would appreciate some help!

Hi Scotty!
I have an 8th gen 2007 Civic LX with 140,000 miles on it.

The other day my car battery died, and when I took it to O'Reily to test it, they said it was a bad batter, and I'll need a new one. I have a portable power bank that I use to jump start it, and I was thinking about jumping it every time I drove it for a while, in lieu of replacing the battery. My only concern, is when I jump start it, there's a grinding noise and I'm worried that I'll prematurely wear my engine.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Scotty,
James here from California; I know you’re not a big fan of vws, but I’m thinking about getting a mk6 Gli as my next car. I have a Jetta currently and know my way around it for the most part. Is there anything I should be wary of as far as common problems go? Also, is there a car you would recommend with similar hp, torque, weight, and has a quick transmission? Thanks

Hey I Watch your YouTube videos every day! Iv learn so much about cars, you are amazing! Keep giviner! Anyways I live in Ontario Canada I own a 2008 Honda Ridgeline 5 speed automatic, had 250000 kms. About a year ago the antifreeze got into the transmission (this is what my machanic told me) so I had it flushed out 2 or three times to get all antifreeze out, then had the tranny filled with new oil. Ever since I had it fixed it shifts hard sometimes going into 5th gear going around 95kmh. I am stumped. Please help! Thanks Scotty 😎

Hi Scotty, my son has a 97 Celica GT with the 2.2L. Car has 300k miles. The car is sending a P0505 code. We have already replaced the IAC and have sprayed the vacuum lines with starter fluid/also tried propane to see if there is a leak. No fluctuation in the idle was observed. I also put a vacuum gauge on the manifold and it is consistently pulling 16-17 lbs of vacuum. Any idea what we should check now?

I have a '99 Grand Marquis and it starts fine but when I put it in gear it kills the battery. My alternator is fine I had that checked and it's a brand new battery.

I've been trying to take the IAC valve off to clean it but the screw is stripped.
I've cleaned the throttle too.

Hello Scotty,

Was it a smart move to buy my neighbor's (W203) 2004 Mercedes C240 with the M112 V6 (Auto tranny with 175,000 miles)? It is made in Germany, heard on the forums and from others that these older Mercedes can go up to 300,000 miles if maintained well. My current car, an (XV40) 2007 Toyota Camry LE, with the 2AZ-FE (Auto tranny with 125,000 miles) needs a new powertrain to run well, according my my mechanic. The car burns oil(quart every 1000 miles), and has metal shards in the oil. Transmission is starting to slip. Both cars don't have any codes. Thank you.

Hi Scotty,

I'm in an interesting spot and I'm looking for some professional advice. I'm about to begin my first real job, meaning that I will be about to start making some real, albeit very modest, money. I am looking for a new-ish sedan that is fun to drive and that will last me a long time. The two main vehicles I'm looking at is a 2017 Acura TLX and a Subaru Impreza Sport (maybe between 2017-19). Acuras will go forever but I know that repairs can be pricey since its a luxury vehicle. This definitely seems to be the better car, but I'm wary about buying something with 25k-35k miles as compared to something that is basically new. Do you have any insight or suggestions for other vehicles in the $15,000 - $20,000 range.

Thanks, Scotty!

Scotty I have a 1998 GMC Sierra 350ci(easiest truck ever to work on), 175k miles, auto trans. When I rev the truck in neutral/park to only a few thousand RPMs and then let off, it sputters and gasps like it's starved of fuel and won't idle correctly until the computer adjusts it after a few seconds. I have personally replaced the fuel filter and just about every intake and exhaust sensor there is. No codes, truck runs perfect and accelerates no problem otherwise. Fuel pump seems to be running with no issue as well. my next guess is the fuel pressure regulator but that seems to be working fine too. Any thoughts?

Hi #savagescotty - QUESTION: You say big engines outlast small turbo engines, but what about turbo diesels?

I want a 2014+ Grand Cherokee for daily driving and towing a camper. Would you get the 5.7 Hemi, or the 3.0 Turbo Diesel? They cost about the same, and have similar power. (Hemi has more HP, diesel has more TQ and MPG)

Hello Scotty!

Got a 2013 Chevy impala 3.6L situation (122,275 mil) Automatic. When started working on the car the codes picked up were p0014 (pending), p0017 (pending), p0019 (pending) p0021 (pending), p0024 (pending), p0324 (pending). The car would not turn over without a little bit of kocking.

After replacing the crankshaft sensor along with the knock sensor the car now reads p0325 (current), p0011 (pending), p0325 (pending), p0325 (permanent). The car now turns over and runs with a very loud knocking sounds and rough idle. I'm counting out a vacuum leak on it.

Recent event, the owner took it to get an oil change and the mechanic did not tighten the oil filter on right and drain plug, which he then drove it for 40min leaking oil until he heard the engine acting up and got a tow.

Thank you for the help!

Hi Scotty I have watched dozens of your videos and I feel like you might be one of the last honest mechanics left. I do have an issue I need your help with. I have a 2013 Nissan Quest SV for the last few days it's been idling and shaking badly. Hey, Scotty!
I have a 2007 Toyota Corolla, 103,250 miles on the clock, and an automatic transmission.

I'm not sure if I need to replace the shocks and struts or not. I just watched your video, and this one is just stumping me. The shocks seem noisier than they ought, and they do make noise when going over a bump. Given I don't hear well, I still want to classify the noise as a clunk or clatter. The boots are torn up, but the fluid doesn't seem to be leaking.
The only other odd thing about them is on both the front left and front right, there's some blueing on the shock's shaft, which I'm assuming means it got too hot or bound up a bit.

What do you think? Replace? Wait it out?

Cheers!

Hey Scotty,
What are your thoughts on the 2003 Hyundai Accent GL 5 speed manual transmission? A close-by dealership has one on sale for $2,490 + 20% estimated for fees. It has 107k miles, two owner, and the service records shows no accidents, it was installed new brakes and timing belt this January. It also states the car was well taken care of and the photos shows the car to be well clean overall. Is it worth it? If not, what would you recommend for the same price range. Thanks!

Hi Scotty, I had a question about a 2004 Lexus ES 330 with 145650 miles and an automatic transmission that I'm thinking of buying from a private party. I just took it to a mechanic who gave it an inspection and found that, while it was a very solid car, it had some things that could be concerning. The valve cover gaskets were seeping oil, and there was oil/grease on the transmission oil cooler line by the radiator. Additionally the rear sway bar bushings were bad and it was possible the struts would need to be replaced as the suspension in the front made noise going over moderate bumps. For around $4000, do you think that it would be a good deal, or does the seeping oil infer a bad future? Thank you so much for all the advice throughout the years, love the show. Kieran Vieira
