Hi Scotty, my wife and I are trying to decide on what car to buy. She wants a SUV but I'm telling her to buy a truck. we are planning on buying a used vehicle. These are her choices.

SUV

  1. 2015 Honda Crosstour
  2. Toyota FJ Cruiser
  3. Toyota Highlander.

Truck

  1. 2002 -20012 Chevrolet Avalanche

Can you recommend a SUV and or a truck that would be good to purchase?

Hey Scotty I have a 2008 Mazdaspeed3 2.3l turbocharged with 176k miles, manual transmission. It shows a P0401 code and I checked the egr valve and it seems new and I checked the hoses and they seem in good condition. What do you think it could be? Thank you Scotty

Hi Scotty, I have a F150 2.7 EcoBoost, new from dealer. Once I loaded dirt on it and I stop filing it when I so bed starting to go down. When I went to the dump they calculated that I had 2 Tones or cargo (max is 700K=1500 pounds). I took the car to Ford service - no issues found. Should I expect some permanent damage ? Maybe something I should monitor/check in the future ?
Many thanks.

Hey Scotty, I’m in the market for a new vehicle. I have my eyes on a 2016 Toyota Camry SE 6 speed. w 27k miles for $14k. Used dealership. I checked the VIN and no accidents or auctions came up. Thoughts? Would greatly appreciate any help/advice since my first car (private party) didn’t turn out too good.

Hi scotty, I'm a big fan of your show and I wanted to ask if $4,000 dollars is reasonable for a 2006 ford mustang with a v6 and 140k miled on the odometer. I do plan on bringing a mechanic but do you have any tips on what to look out for problems wise. Thank you!

Hey Scotty! I'm looking at getting a used 2015 Honda Accord LX. $14500 CAD, 71000kms, no accidents... but it's a CVT. I know you said that Honda CVTs suck, but I don't drive manual and I have no one to teach me. Will the CVT in this Accord cause reliability issues down the road? Should I just stick with a boring Civic?

Hey Scotty, recently purchased an 1987 toyota aw11 mr2, it had 230k miles and runs great. The ac system doesn’t cool from what I’ve seen it’s a common problem, should I replace it with oem or look for a replacement? Not sure where to find one

Hey scotty, I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee and it’s having trouble starting. I jumped it on Friday and it started and drove fine. When I came back on Monday, it wouldn’t start, even after I tried to jump it again. When I turn the key, i get the typical clicking noise, but jumping still won’t start it. Any suggestions (fuel pump works fine, battery is newish)?

Hey Scotty, I just discovered that the project car I’m working on has a seized engine. So my question is—is how do I fix a seized engine? The engine is an early 60’s Ford 6.4 L 390 cu. in. FE V8.

Scotty, help! I thought I finally found a good mechanic, but now I'm not so sure. I have a 2003 Toyota Tacoma with 5 speed manual, a 2.4L engine and only 74,000 miles. It's always started immediately and ran great until one day it started missing. I got code P0301. I took it to my mechanic and he said he couldn't replicate it. There was a forest fire threatening, so I told him I needed it soon. He replaced all the spark plugs and coils, the fuel filter, and cleaned the injectors for $1,000. It ran ok on the way home, but we had to evacuate a couple days later and it started missing again as we drove away.
When I took it back, he replaced the injector on cylinder 1 for another $400. Now it cranks for 5 - 10 seconds before it starts. What can I do?

Scotty, hold on to your shades. A 3 part question. My girlfriend and father have twin 2007 Toyota RAV 4’s.
Bought both brand new together. Her car was burning oil bad, I got involved like 3-4 years ago and and found out about the piston and ring problem though many google searches. We contacted Local Toyota dealer did the test and they did repair free of charge at approximately 109k miles on car. Runs great now. Currently 139k
Question 1: you have said they “rebuild the engine” I thought they only change piston and rings. What did they change exactly?
Question 2: Her fathers twin RAV 4 has currently 19k miles on it as of today! Obviously, no oil problems yet. What should he do or not do with this car?
Question 3: My girlfriend (nicknamed Big Princess by my 7 year old) is looking at new SUV’s now, wants something different. What can you recommend for Michele ( Her real name, Lol)?

Scotty, I'm buying a new car and I'm going to get either a used lexus 200t 31k miles for 21k or Infinity Q50 65k miles for 14k. Which should I choose.
Also should I trade in my 2009 honda accord? I replaced the starter but it still struggles to turnover in the winter. Is this a sign of wire issues?

Hey Scotty! I just bought a 2006 Honda Civic EX with 140k miles on it with an Automatic transmission for $3000 in California. it vibrates a little bit when I’m at a stop sign for example but when it’s in park it doesn’t do that little vibration. it also makes a squeaky noise on the right side under the hood where the pulleys are. Are those things I should be aware of or should I just ignore them or fix them. Also the engine light isn’t on but i put my code reader and it had code p1684 which is Throttle valve return spring performance problem. What should I do? I mean the car still runs great! But I’m scared of this little issues. Thanks Scotty!

Hey Scotty. 2003 Honda Civic with 223380 miles. I have an interesting situation..

.. so I replaced a failing alternator back in August last year with a brand new one from o'Reilly's. Then that brand new alternator went out up in my college in December, and I had to quickly swap it with a rebuilt alternator from o'Reillys (new ones weren't in stock) as well as recharge my battery that was only a year old with new terminals.

So with this rebuilt alternator, the Battery light comes on at a hot idle for a brief second, car kinda shakes but only real slightly. Had the alternator tested but didnt seem to show anything. My friend says he thinks it can be a tuning issue and maybe not a alternator problem. I wanted to get your opinion on that; do you think I just have bad luck with alternators, or may I have an even greater issue such as tuning?

MR SCOTTY I NEED YOUR MECHANICAL JUDGEMENT so i just turned 18 im starting at a factory making around 12.50 an hour with 7 12 hour shifts per pay check and i want a slightly better than adverage first car i love love love the dodge avengers ive been seeing a lot of 2008 se models and i seen a 2008 sxt with a lot lot lot of miles 277k but ive hear of people getting up to almost 400k obviously every condition an engine is put through is different and if there city or highway miles but this car is being sold for 2,500 and im sure i could talk them down to 1,600 to 2,000$ i have barely any responsibilities to pay and i have seen many low mile engines on line and would be more than happy to learn how to put the new engine in if the car needs it (i have a lot of good mechanics in my family as a bonus) but my question is should i do this is it worth it could this turn into an endless "project car" or could a new engine and few more vitals being replaced when needed IF needed turn this car into a lasting daily driver id love to hear from you i understand everyone gets very busy but i would really like to hear your opinion thank you scotty
Love your chanel and videos by the way !

Hello Scotty, I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with 76k miles with an automatic transmission. less than a year ago I had my engine replaced due to those darn recalls. The engine killed itself and they never told me how or why it happened. I assume it was the fuel pump failing and the engine seized. I was unable to start my engine once it died; so that is my deduction/reasoning. Either way I got a new engine for "free".

Usually the car starts no problem and feels smooth. However due to the hot Texas weather my car is starting rough and shakes the car slightly. I'm worried my car engine will die again and Ill be out of a car.

What would you do? Wait for the car to die and buy another one or trade it in before the car kills itself. I still have till December and 24k miles for the full engine warranty/coverage. I just paid the darn thing off and I am hesitant to have another car payment.

Hey Scotty, what do you think about a 2017 Chevy Impala with 15k miles in amazing condition, with everything working. It’s from a dealer, and I will use it to commute to work and to the supermarket, both less then a mile away, and I might go on a road trip every now and then. What do you think about it? Thanks Scotty, and have a nice da y!

Hi Scotty, i have a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero with 98k miles, automatic transmission. Two years ago i had the rack and pinion steering replaced and recently the car lost power steering for about five miles then it came back on. Now, when i get it up to about 70-80 mph the steering wheel starts to shake. Is this a simple fix or should i have my mechanic look at it closer? Thanks!

A 2015 Nissan Sentra (manual transmission)and based on the Nissan Dealership mechanic it needs a new transmission. The car has 135454 miles on it and the cost for them (Nissan) to fix it is $4800 at the Nissan dealership. Do you think it’s worth getting fix? And do you think it’s worth getting a used transmission placed in it?

1996 Chevy C1500 4.3 V6 Automatic No Codes with 130,000 miles. Iv read that these engines have exhaust valve problems due to poor lubrication. What can I do to help prevent this? Any other advice with owning this truck?

URGENT QUERY:

Check engine light on my 2007 Toyota 4Runner V6 with 213450 miles. OBD Code reads 3 different codes: P040, P0441 and P0455.

Initially took to AutoZone to read the code for free. They suggested replacing the fuel cap. Replaced with OEM fuel cap from dealership. NO LUCK.

Took it to a local mechanic and the diagnosed and asked to replace both upstream and downstream Oxygen sensors. Quoted over 800$, So I replaced myself. NO LUCK.

Took it to another mechanic and he suggested to replace Evap Purge Valve.! Since I got three different opinions from three different people, I decided to take it to my local Toyota dealership. After 150$ diagnostic fees, they said the vehicle needs Exhaust manifold and Charcoal canister replaced. The quote they gave is 3600$.!!

I am not sure what and who I should trust at this moment. What do you suggest that I do now when 4 different mechanics gave 4 different suggestions. Please help.

Hello Scotty, I really need your help. My 2013 Chevy Equinox Lt automatic V6 with a little over 60k miles bought from CarMax and gifted to my wife and from my mother in-law. The car has its emissions light on in 2019 we took it to Chevy and got a Solenoid replaced along with a new exhaust because our old one had a crack in it ($800 job).Fast forward to today emissions light comes one again took it to Chevy and they replaced a piston ring that was causing the car to burn oil too fast (2week job). We picked up the car and one day later the light came back on so we took it back to Chevy, they said the solenoid they replaced last year went bad due to the piston ring issue so they replaced it, we picked up the car and two days later the light is back on. So far warranty has cover the piston ring which was over 2k to fix but the warranty expired so from now on we’ll have to pay. I can’t afford to keep putting money into the car and I can’t afford a car payment. I have two kids and am married we kind of need the space the car provides so we need to be able to fix the issue. Any suggestions? Thank you. Also big fan thank you for the knowledge videos.
