Grandson is buying a 2003 BMW 325i wagon from the son of a mechanic who has been in business for lots of years. The car has 204,000 miles and is selling for $2,500. He was told oil had been changed ever 3,000 miles but with Rotella 15w40 because he said his dad used that oil on all their high-mileage cars. Should my grandson keep using the 15w40 or the fully-synthetic 5w30 BMW says to use?

2006 Charger V8 squeak sound, not too sure what it is, please help me Scotty.

Recently, I noticed a squeaking sound coming from my engine of my 2006 Dodge Charger R / T (5.7 v8) (113k miles). I have not had it looked at yet however there are absolutely no leaks and coolant seems to be at the same proper level for a week while the squeaking is happening. From what I read and heard it seems like a water pump related issue. I have to wait for 2 weeks to get it looked at. Is it safe to drive until then? I drive 4km-6Km daily (2km-3Km each direction). Can I drive the car without having to worry about the pump seizing until I can get it looked at or should I find an alternate way? Is this even the water pump or am I being mislead?

Ill include a link to a video that has the sound, let me know what you guys think this sounds like (put to max volume as its hard to hear)

Hi Scotty! Wife and I are looking for a replacement vehicle and we were researching the latest Volkswagens we’ve had good luck with our last two VW’s so that had the 2.5 L five cylinder engines. The newest jettas and passats have the 2 L turbo and from what I understand it’s not a very good engine and has many flaws. Was wondering if you could recommend a four-door car that has a bomber engine with a timing chain perhaps in Nissan or Toyota? I’ve been following your channel for a long time and I appreciate your opinion thanks a lot.

Scotty what do you think is best for a used car from a private party.

A 2010 Nissan Rogue with 75,000 miles at $4,800 or a 2010 Toyota Highlander for $9,000 with 50,0000 miles. This will be my first time buying a car

Hey Scotty, I have a 2006 Ford crown Victoria with 164k miles.. recently had to replace a starter and trans cooler line. Was planning on selling it this morning but it blew a power steering seal somewhere. Should I bother fixing it? Lower the price dramatically? Or part it out? Was asking 1500$ for reference.

Hi Scotty, I was thinking of purchasing from a private party seller in Southern California, a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder, RWD, 6 cylinder, Automatic Trany, 105000 original miles, CLEAN Title, current smog certificate, asking price $2500. Is this a good SUV to buy or should I run away? What do you think?

Hey Scotty got a 2009 BMW 328i has 116,400 miles. Just wanted to know your recommendation for tires. I have winters on it at the moment and I don’t know what to do in the spring. Should I get summers and keep switching from summer to winter tires back and forth every fall/winter or should I just buy all seasons. I live in Michigan by the way if that has any influence on your recommendation. Thank You and God bless!

Hey Scotty,

I have a 2016 Toyota Camry SE 4 cylinder with an automatic transmission that has almost 87,000 miles. The transmission fluid has never been changed and I’m wondering if I’ve waited too long.

I saw you mention every 50-80k miles, do you think changing will cause problems?

Thanks!

Hey Scotty,
I have a 2017 Ford Mustang GT with 25,600 miles with a 6speed manual transmission. I’ve recently purchased it used at a Ford dealership here in Seattle. I’m having this “tick” noise coming from the bottom of my engine. It all started when I changed my oil after 3 months of ownership using Motorcraft 5-20 synthetic blend using the oem oil filter. It ticks a bit when it’s in idle and it ticks continuously when I rev it at 1000-2000 rpms.It doesn’t go away even when it’s warmed up. I’ve done a bit of a research and I found out I’m not the only one with this problem. Its my weekend car and I don’t drive it hard.
Help me out Scotty!

Hi Scotty
I have a 2012 Toyota RAV4 with 210k miles 4 cylinder automatic. Here’s the story. I took the old gal in for state inspection ( the same day as you had the show on not taking your car for inspections where the want to sell you parts) in any case I had to buy a rear shock to pass the inspection at a total cost of $ 400.00 with all the BS and whatever shop towels and crap they add on.
Anyhow they also state I need a power steering rack ( it’s leaking) for $2 k and a alignment for $ 100 plus it’s gonna need pads and rotors for over $400.00
I had a front wheel bearing put on a thousand miles ago for $700.00
So basically we are looking at close to $2500.00 to keep this on the road. With no promise of other issues.
Yes I’m taking it to an independent mechanics to confirm. Question is is this in line with pricing elsewhere? Should I dump this thing now or hang on? The trade in is a pitiful 2k.

Scotty I recently purchased a 02 Toyota Camry XLE Automatic Trany with 121120 original miles. i bot it for $1550. Before I bought it it had a check engine light so I met the seller at AutoZone and AutoZone recommended replacing the spark plugs and that should solve it. so i put in new ngk irridium plugs as stated in the manual. to clear the mil codes i had to disconnect the battery. Afterwards I raised the front of the car on jack stands & completed a "drive cycle" as stated in this link

Along With my daily driving i have added 81 more miles since disconnecting the battery. The problem is when I connect the ODBII scanner to check the IM readiness it still shows that all of the monitors are in N/A status as a result I can't get it to pass smog Because the smog station says the catalytic converter is "not ready yet". any ideas or suggestions on this?

Howdy, Scotty!
I'm looking at a knock-around truck that will also be reliable daily if need be. I really wanted a 1st-Gen Tacoma but they're ridiculously expensive.

My options are either a 90s GMC/Chevy single-cab or a 90s F-150 single-cab. It would be an automatic & I'm looking to buy from private seller. Which of the two are better? Thanks for what you do!

Hey Scotty
I recently bought a 2009 Mazda 3 with 145k miles. The automatic transmission would hold 1st gear when I start driving on a cold start then It would slip into 2nd gear. After driving for a minute the transmission would work as normal.

The ATM fluid was brown so decided to changed the ATM fluid, but didn't change the filter. Now on the cold start the transmission shifts smoothly and goes through gears smoothly while driving.

Should I still drop the pan and change the filter and add new fluid or just leave it alone?

Hi Scotty, I rarely use my parking brake except for when on a steep surface. Nothing wrong with my parking pawl but I was just wondering if it’s worth making a habit of using my parking brake even when parked on a flat surface such as my driveway, in order to prolong the life of the parking pawl and keep the parking brake in good working order? Or is this unnecessary?

I have a 1990 Pontiac Bonneville with 307K miles and today driving home when I came to a stop my alternator voltage was slowly dropping, but when I accelerated, the belt squeaked like mad but voltage went back to normal and squeak went away, driving like normal. The 2nd time it did this I put it in neutral and revved it and it did the same thing. I do have a noisy water pump I'm changing in 2 days could that cause the voltage drop or is it something else? It's also freezing cold. I appreciate your insight!

Hey Scotty! I have a 2015 VW JETTA SE with 87xxx the engine is 1.8L engine(And I've heard this is a supposed turbo model) in the beginning I was having a pretty heavy oil consumption (2qts every week give or take) I was mindful to check the oil and top it off as soon as the oil light came on. Fast foward a couple months and my car started running rough and the check engine light came on. After OBD diagnosis (P0300) I changed the spark plugs and two coils it ran okay for about a month (Oil still being replaced but still no visible leaks or puddles) It started running rough again and upon removal of spark plugs this time I noticed oil on the thread finally let me know the leak was internal.

My question is: What are common hidden leaks that could be possible in this particular model and would would you suggest I try first as far as repairing.. Or is it worth fixing... should I just trade it in? I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank youu!

Hey scotty, i just wanted some suggestions from you considering your vast experience. I have an old accord 2004 with the 2.4 motor. A while back when i was changing the oil pressure switch i think i overtightened it by mistake or maybe someone who worked on the engine before damaged the threads a little so while tightening the switch a small piece off the engine broke around the hole where it threads in. Its an old car with 250k miles i dont want to spend a fortune on it. I know i cant put a pressure switch on there anymore but i just want to close that hole shut so i can atleast drive the car, i dont care if the oil pressure light stays on. What is the easiest and best way to close a hole like that so it doesent leak any oil? I am thinking about using jb weld in there and try to somehow thread a bolt on the hole. But if i cant get a bolt in there is there anything i can close the hole with?
Thanks

Good day Scotty. I am in need of a simple get back and forth from work car. I wanted to stay around the $3000 or under mark. So I am obviously looking for a used vehicle. A family member has a 2001 Ford Taurus with an automatic transmission that has 50,000 miles on it, but has not been driven in over a year (longer than one year, but definitely shorter than two years) the car needs a new battery, but I have a mechanic I trust coming to look at the vehicle soon. They are giving the vehicle to me for free so I am definitely going to be staying under budget. Do you have any tips or suggestions for that specific vehicle with the mileage and age of it, and what do you suggest I look out for with a car that has sat for over a year? Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hey Scotty, my 2001 Honda Accord EX (Automatic) with about 167,000 miles has a crack in the flex pipe part of the exhaust, making it fail the VA state inspection. Would it be wiser to fix it, or just get rid of it and find another used car? I'm trying to look for a used manual car, preferably Honda or Toyota, with a budget of around 2,500 or hopefully less, as I just need a car for when I'm home from college. Thoughts on whether or not buying a used stick is worth it, especially because most of them online have close to 200,000 miles? Thanks.

Hey Scotty, My mom has a 2002 Subaru Forester, automatic transmission with 200k miles on the engine. The car kept getting every month or so a P0304 code which is a cylinder #4 misfire. Her mechanic says it's her head gasket that's leaking oil and eventually would need to be replaced. It doesn't appear to be effecting the cooling system yet. I'm wondering if changing her engine oil and adding a bottle of AT 205 reseal could help at sealing up that oil leak in the head gasket? I know it wouldn't be a permanent fix, but was hoping it might help her to be able to get some more use out of the car before she junks it and buys a used Toyota Rav4. I've heard the AT 205 reseal works good at rejuvenating leaky crankshaft seals. Do you think it could also help with a head gasket oil leak too? Thanks

Hey Scotty I have a 2004 Mazda 6 automatic 4 cylinder. It has 120km. My problem is my left turn signal stopped working. I checked ALL fuses including the ones under the dash by the kick panel none were blown. I replaced the tail and head relays and still nothing. I then replaced the turn signal switch on the steering wheel... still nothing the right one works fine and if I try my hazards only the right one will flash I checked my bulbs all are good. I also tried switching out the turn signal housing that holds the bulb with still no luck. Any ideas?

Hey Scotty, I just replaced the spark plugs on my 97 Camry 2.2. this was my first time doing so, so I used a torque wrench set to 13 ft lbs. I'm a little concerned, because it seemed like it took a little too much force before the wrench clicked. How would you know if you overtightened the plugs? I started the car up after changing all 4 and drove it around and it seems to be running fine.

Vehicle has 98K miles on it. Thanks Scotty 😀
