What causes a transmission switch to leak? On the 2016 Honda civic.

Hi Scotty, I followed your suggestion and recently purchased a 2017 Toyota Corolla SE with 57,000kms, 6spd transmission. I ran a Vehicle Test using ELM327 using Torque Pro app to check for codes. It came back with a MID: $f0 TID:$10 Manufacturer defined MID Min: 6,472 Max: 44,981. Current: 65,520 “Not OK”. There are no check engine lights and no fault codes stored. Car seems to run ok but I wanted to see if it’s something I need to bring to the dealership while I still have 3,000kms of bumper to bumper warranty left? Thanks in advance.

Hey Scotty I got a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero sport, took it to a mechanic for new coils and wires, cover gaskets and normal tune up maintenance, cost about 960, had the same issue before took it in, he said he would fix it and it been over two weeks and he hasn’t gotten to it yet, do you think I can ask for the car back and for a refund?

Hey Scotty, I'm thinking about buying a 1989 Firebird Formula T top either automatic or manual transmission, preferred manual. I've been looking on Facebook, eBay, Craigslist, and a few other used car sites and was wanting to know what to look out for and what would be expected when in the market for one?

I have a 2004 dodge Dakota sxt quad cab with 3.7l v6. It was overheating and i noticed the filler tube had a leak. So, i replaced it, and installed a new oe thermostat. I also flushed the system via garden hose. Even took the radiator out and flushed both ways. I thought it was fixed. Was running like it should after. I used a lyle funnel on a slight incline to refill and burp the system. I also used the best coolant to refill, red P-HOAT zrex.

About six weeks has passed, and now its trying to overheat again. Its not leaking anywhere, but it is releasing pressure to the expansion tank blowing some of the coolant out the overflow tube. It will get about 3/4 way up the gauge and then cools right back down to normal.

I tried to burp it again, but I am noticing pressure blowing back toward the radiator at the upper radiator hose where the filler tube is fitted. The pressure boils the coolant out of the funnel just before it reaches operating temperature and then once the thermostat opens it sucks the fluid down, but there is a delay in this reaction. I think the pump is fighting against backpressure and finally overcomes it and cools the engine.

I have been told that its probably a head gasket. However, there is no milky substance in oil nor white exhaust. It runs good. No loss in power or anything going on. If it were an intake or head gasket, i would think i would notice major performance issues or at the least coolant turning up in the oil or burning off in the exhaust.

I have good heat. My coolant fan is working. I can feel hot water come through the lower radiator hose when the thermostat opens. The thermostat is in the lower radiator hose near block on this model. I have run my garden hose through the heater core hoses separately to check for blockages, and it seems like there are none. This model also has a bleeder valve on the block at the upper radiator hose. Last time i bled there as well as burping with a lile funnel. This time I could not get the bleeder valve lose. It started trying to strip. So, i left it alone and tried again to burp the air out with the special funnel kit. It wont come out. It just keeps pushing more air into the system. The overheating is random. No pattern to the overheating and nothing in particular changes the symptoms. It just does it at random times. Even in 40 degree weather. Normally I can fix anything I own, but I'm lost on this one.

So, to wrap this all up into a concise question, I guess I need to ask two simple questions.

  1. Can a gasket causes the above symptoms without affecting performance and without leaking coolant internally (into the motor or exhaust) as well as not leaking externally.

  2. Is it possible that i bought a faulty thermostat? ( i did test it in boiling water and cold water and it was opening and closing)

  3. If not, what else could it possibly be?

Oh, I forgot to mention that I have also put in a new stant radiator cap.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Scotty, I hear a rumbling sound when going down the highway at 65-70 mph, However when I press the gas the sound goes away but when I release the gas pedal the rumbling sound gets loud then gradually gets quieter so it’s usually when I’m coasting a high speeds I can hear by the front passenger side I’m not sure what it is. 14’ Hyundai Sonata 82k miles

Scotty I'm working on a friend's 2007 Toyota Corolla and it will turn over but it won't start. The fuel pump relays are clicking and seem to be working?. we figured it was probably fuel pump so we replaced the fuel pump. Also just before I started doing this job. they replace the battery that somebody it's stolen. And put a new battery in it. Then they thought it might have been a chipped key so they called a locksmith to come out and redo the key for the ignition and re chip it. And still it just turns over and does not start. yet while you're turning it over the security light on the dash is flashing?

Hey Scotty, love your vids and advice. I was recently looking into the feasibility of importing a Toyota Hilux Surf into the U.S. I found one that was 4wd and a diesel from 1992 with 80,000 miles in immaculate condition with absolutely no rust. It was priced at $2,700. However, being that it was being shipped from Japan this raised the price to 6k. Do you think it is worth this price? What's your opinion on importing old cars in general? Thanks in advance.

Hey scotty, what do you think about buying a 2000 oldsmobile Aurora with 140000 miles, to by to replace my 2001 chevy prizm with 141000 miles, that need a catalytic converter. The oldsmobile is 750$, and also needs a cat. I can drive it to the end of next year though till inspection, but my '01 prizm/ Corolla needs a cat, and inspection is up in February 2020, and I wont buy a cat because it cost more then the car. What should I do. Thanks scotty.

Hey scotty, I'm looking for a weird, sporty car to work on and drive around in every now and then. I found a 2004 BMW 325 manual, with 225k miles on it. The guy says it has an engine rattle, and a rough idle and is willing to ditch it for 500 bucks. Do you think I might be able to fix it? Or should I stay away? The risk is pretty much zero it seems.

Hey Scotty, I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 2Door with 4WD, at 250,300 miles. I did the front suspension rebuild and had it aligned because my front tires were almost bald on the inside. Its been a bit and i left the bad front tires on the front because the rest of it had full tread only the inside was bad. I want to know if doing that can cause the aliment to go bad again, prematurely?

Thanks, John

@Scotty Kilmer Hey Scotty, I drive a 2005 Buick LaCrosse CXL with the 3.8 liter V6 and 4 speed automatic transmission. It currently has 118k miles on it. I want to do a transmission fluid and filter change. The owners manual says to do it every 100k miles. I’m unsure if it was done, I’ve only owned it for 6 months now. The fluid is a brownish tint but not black. Can I still do the fluid and filter change or is it not such a good idea?

Hi Scotty, I am thinking of purchasing a 2013 Benz C350 4Matic with the updated M276 3.5 V6. I know you are not a fan of mercedes, but I am curious if you have anything good to say about the C class, specifically the later W204 generation (years 2012-2014), the last regular C classes that were built in germany! Many have fairly trouble-free experiences with the C classes, generally speaking (due to their somewhat simplistic design over the higher models). Love your videos, thanks!

Sir my mpg dropped from 52 to 28mpg suddenly. Along with accelerating slowly when i press the gas pedal. Due to car hesitating to speed up. Its consuming alot more fuel. When i unplugged the cable going to the evap valve purge. Car would go faster but not better mpg. But its a sign to what i can do. Power and valve seems fine. Plz help. Mpg sucks

Scotty- I must be the unluckiest person in the world because it seems I have the most unreliable Honda CRV!! 2003 105,000 miles, code P0420. I don't think it would be the catalytic converter because it has been in Florida for 13 years and now it came up to NY and it's been about 3-4 years here, so it shouldn't be rusted out. Would the next most logical thing be one of the o2 sensors?

Hey Scotty, I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 liter hemi. Mileage is 251253. Last week it started revving up and down while driving, with this flashing lightning bolt in the corner. When I pulled over, shut it off and waited a few minutes and started it back up it was fine. As the days went, it got worse. I looked up what that meant and I replaced the electronic throttle bottle, the purge valve, the actuator, the egr valve, the IAT sensor and the map sensor. I did a diagnostic on it and no codes, just the flashing bolt and rough idle. I called the dodge dealership and asked if the electronic throttle body assembly needed to be relearned and they said no, because the new ones come preprogrammed. I watched your video on doing hard reset with the cables disconnected and left it over night. Reconnected everything and it went back to the flashing bolt and limp after 15 minutes. Can you help please?

Scotty, I asked you this question before but I'm still having problems with my 2017 Honda Accord Coupe shaking on the freeway. My mechanic told me I needed new tires, they had about 40K mi on them, so I bought a new set of Yokohamas and the car still shakes at freeway speeds 60-80 mph. I have a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer LS 4x4 automatic, have about 135k I think (off the top of my head) and I'm wondering if I take the ABS fuse out will it hurt my car? Also, I had to change the cluster in my 05 because the guages were all messed up, took it out of my 02 surprisingly everything works, but the miles from my 02 are still there. I changed my radiator hoses and water pump, but without draining the block, though and refilled with water (so it has SOME coolant, but not a lot). I'm waiting a week or two to make sure there's no leaks before completely draining and refilling with 50/50. In the next week it will get just a little below 32 degrees (25 maybe 20), and even then it's just for a few hours. Will it burst any pipes, or should it be ok since it's not getting far below freezing or for very long? 2003 Nissan Xterra 4 cyl manual with 200k
