Oil Type

Oil Type after 153000 miles in Toyota Corolla 2008

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2008 Toyota corolla with 153000 miles. The motor cap says it uses oil SAE 5W-30, but when i when to buy it, the guy selling the oil warned me that with that many miles i can't keep using the original recommended oil, so he sold me a SAE 10W-30. It was the original oil from Toyota, but i was wondering if what he said is true. In case this is true, after how many miles do i need to change the oil type and whats the criteria for changing it? Also, is it worth to buy the original oil from Toyota, or do you recommend any other oil?

Thanks for the answers. I think that the car is burning some oil since i had to complete the oil in the last change. But going to take a look at it, and also see if can find that Mobil-1 or Castrol oil.

Toyota is a car manufacturer, not a petroleum refinery. Any motor oil that Toyota carries branded "Toyota" is made by an oil refinery. My research showed good data for Mobil-1 full synthetic for higher mileage vehicles. It's what I use when I change my oil, in 5W-30 weight.
