My wife and I have 2003 Toyota matrix... looks almost identical to the one Scotty Kilmer had in his video -- even the same color. My wife loves the car, but we are having electrical problems with it. Want to try to fix electrical problem before giving up on car.

  1. When I drive the car around and then stop, the car will not restart sometimes. I cannot lock the car with the remote either when this happens; I can unlock the car with the remote, but not lock it. We tried the other remote thinking remote was bad, but that remote had same effect. I can lock and unlock driver side door with the car key only.

The car will not start with the key. In fact, I hear no clicking. I checked car battery and it has 12.6 volts, so battery is not the problem. There are hardly any lights on in the car -- dome light works, but that is about it.

Then, I let the car sit for about 10 minutes, and I try the remote again to unlock the car. I start hearing a very faint click and very very dim headlights go on (that is normal on toyota matrix that head light comes on briefly with remote). Car still does not start.

Then, I let the car sit for about 15 more minutes, and the car unlocks, and I can start the car. This has happened 3 times within the last few days.

Any ideas?

History of wierd electrical problems with Matrix. a) A few months ago we noticed that when I step on brakes, lights would dim. Also, radio would cut out for a second every now and then. Clock on radio would also constantly flicker after about 5 minutes of driving. b) A few months ago I replaced battery thinking that would fix 1) above. No, that did not fix it.
c) A few days ago, I had alternator replaced because battery would only get charged to 12.4 volts with the car on. I figured, okay, maybe it was the alternator causing a) above. Well, that did fix the headlights going dim when stepping on the brakes, but it did seems to have caused **1) ** above. Or **1) ** was a problem waiting to happen and it is coincidence. d) My wife does have an after market alarm called Model PRO 9232S. I disconnected it when 1) happened the last time. However, I do not know if I disconnected correctly. (I never liked the alarm but wife boutght it before we got married.)

Thanks. Like Scotty Kilmer videos a lot.
