My 1989 riviera is still having starting problems. I just got a tune up, new fuel filter, new fuel pump, new alternator, new ignition coil pack, new ignition module, oil/trans change, and a new battery withing the last two weeks. I haven't started the car in the morning yet because I just got the fuel pump in today.I tried starting it again after driving it once I picked it up from the shop, and it just cranks and cranks. Once I pop the hood, the car starts within five minutes. 10-15 minutes max with the hood popped open. I think the engine is flooding, but I don't know what causing it. I tested the injectors with a screwdriver and they were all firing. I don't think it's the crank shaft because when it does start, it's always consistent in timing. Starts right up like a brand new car, there's only 122k miles on it. The engine is a gm 3800 3.8L Series 1. Anyone know what could be happening?

I did an injector cleaning with the oil change. I also have hit the gas while starting it in the morning, and it does work, in about three tries.. However, the mechanic at the shop told me that if I cycle the key it'll do the same thing, and it did. In about 20 cycles lol, I feel like that's bad for the battery. Seeing as that's a sign of a bad fuel pump I got it changed. Came home today and, well you know the rest

Try either a pressure cleaning service for the injectors, or replace them IF they're actually flooding. Flooring the gas pedal should shut off the injectors when it's having problems starting, see if it then starts up alot quicker. It'd also be good to find a mechanic who has an old OBD1 scan tool for GM and see if anything looks amiss in the ecm readings. BTW I only got 12 mpg around town in a '90 3.1L Olds Cutlass that ran like a top, but it did get 25 mpg on the highway.

I also get less mpg's. I usually get 18 in the city, but I'm at 13.9
