indeed most oil change shops are rip offs and full of scam artists. i work at one and i think the only thing that sets us apart is we will show our customers what is wrong with their vehicle. we will take them to their vehicle and show them the problem. take pictures if theyre too old to go in the pit. show them their dirty air filter and explain everything to them. questions no problem. for this reason, we are busier than most other stores. better customer service. i also do my own work and buy tools as i go. i use harbor freight, walmart, home depot, and lowes. but i am sure to do my research on all my tools. if i spend any money i want it to last. my biggest problem is diagnostics. i have looked into many and i am willing to spend a good $500 for a good OEM grade or professional grade scanner. i too live in texas but sadly i am not lucky enough to live in or near the big three...austin, dallas, or houston. i live closest to San Antonio. i often ask my cousin for recommendations as he is a seasoned mechanic for toyota in california. i guess to the point, i really would just like a good diagnostics scanner (bi directional of course). something that can do it all like abs, airbags, and all the live data i can get. i will be damned if i pay someone else to do what i can do myself.
