I wish you and your family a prosperous New Year Scotty! My question is what's the difference between an automobile generator that was the technology of the day up until the 1950's or so and the modern day alternator? Is it a question of cars going from 6 volt to 12 volt systems or is there more to it than that?

generators generate DC current. Alternators create alternating current which is then turned into DC current to run the car. They charge better under low rpms than generators and last longer

Wow, good info to know, thank you Scotty! My Dad was always a big fan of Plymouth, AMC Cars, and Dodge Trucks (to this day I don't understand why) but he always had problems with the batteries and charging systems from the 70's to the 80's with these various vehicle's that he owned. Is there a common electrical fault with the charging systems on these vehicles?
