I live in the Houston area and looking to replace a 2006 Honda Accord with something a little bigger now that I have three kids and we like to go camping/fishing/hunting or to whatever sporting activity they have on weekends. Most days, however, I’m commuting by myself 40 miles round trip to and from the office.

I need something to:

  • Commute to the office
  • Room for camping/fishing/hunting gear and 3-4 people (me and at least a couple of my pre-teenage kids) on the weekends
  • I don’t need to pull a boat or trailer
  • Budget is around $40k or less
  • New or used is ok
  • Reliable
  • At least 20 mpg highway
  • Looks good in the office garage and also at home at the campground, fishing area, etc.

I’m thinking either a pickup or SUV. I like the ruggedness, reliability and looks of a Toyota 4runner, but not the rough ride and poor MPG. I like the looks and ride of a Grand Cherokee, but it seems short on cargo space. The new Kia Telluride has plenty of space for people and gear (with third row seats flat), but there‘s a 3-5 month wait to order one. I’ve also considered full size and midsize pick up trucks (Ford F150, Ram1500, Chevy Colorado, Honda Ridgeline), although I like the protection from elements and theft that an SUV provides for cargo.

Is there a vehicle I’m overlooking? What would you get if you were me?

Thanks!

Scotty, Thanks for your reply. I can see you are very busy with all the questions posted here for you. Maybe I’ll revisit the 4runner, or check out the Tacoma as Radien suggests.
