I have a 2004Malibu classic and the engine seems to have a ticking noise all the time. The thicking sound gets faster when the car is in gear and accelerating? I have had the car for about ten years and it has 143000 miles on it. At times the ticking would go away with an oil change. If you you could give me some feed back it would be greatly appreciated. Average diyer. Thanks

The car has had it regular tune ups.and oil changes throughout the time that I have owned it. I like to keep my cars in good shape so I never miss any routine work.

To tell you the truth I really don't know. The car is my wife's car she got it back in 08. I didnt come in until 2012 since then I have not changed the timing chain/belt.

When did you last replace Timing Chain? Seems your '04 has a chain, something to check. Causes of engine ticking: needs a valve adjustment? Failing water pump could make ticking-type noise. Alternator starting to fail might tick. Bad belt pulleys. Things to check.
