If the noise is coming from the front near the belt housing, it could be a fraying timing belt. Saw that on a 4 cyl 99 that mom in law had. The belt was so frayed that it flapped around making a rattle that drove her nuts. Only brought it up to me weeks later. Took the cover off and was amazed it was not totally gone. Had the car towed to the mechanic and he too was amazed. One strand holding it together and she was driving it! 89K on it at the time. It snaps and adios engine. XLE models had 4s and 6 cyl? This one was an LE.
