Hi Scotty,
I have a 2004 LS 430(180K miles) . Had some coolant leak issue and valve body (not transmission) gasket replaced recently. Immediately following (within few miles < 15) I started getting P0983 Shift Solenoid D High issue. The mechanic reset it but it comes back some times immediately and some time after 50 or 60 miles. When the code comes, the mileage drops, I seem to smell gas also. Took it to a transmission specialist, I am told since the vehicle has 180000+ miles and given the symptoms its more than likely a hydraulic issue (not an electrical issue or solenoid issue) and needs a new transmission or transmission re-built. Given the sequence of events I am thinking this possibly could be an electrical issue or just the solenoid issue (may be I am just hopeful :) ) Is there any way I can test it? or do you also think given the symptoms and the mileage the transmission is a toast? Any advise is appreciated.

Symptoms: P0983 Shift Solenoid D High, MPG drops, gas smell when the code appears. Resetting the code everything goes back to normal for few miles or sometimes 80 or 90 miles Vehicle : 2004 LS 430 Miles : 180K

realize those V8s become money pits at that age, the 6s are much better. It's just flat wearing out inside the tranny. Live with it
