Hi Scotty, I have a 1996 Lincoln Town Car Executive edition 4.6 L V8 automatic transmission.222979 mi. It has begun overheating and we can't figure out what the problem is. New radiator, new thermostat, new coolant temp sensor, new recovery tank cap, no leaking of fluid, no damaged hoses, no smell of coolant. Temperature gauge on the instrument cluster is a light with bars not a gauge. Gauge gets to normal temperature and will show overheating as much as four bars above-normal and then drop back down to normal temperature. It started while idling but now does it while driving, but not every single time we drive the car. Sometimes just one bar and then back down. If the car shows overheating while idling I can turn the car off and start it again and it will show normal temperature. My contention with this issue is if the car truly was overheating when you turn the engine off it wouldn't drop back down to the normal range instantly, it would stay hot correct? That made us think almost 100% that it was the sensor. Just put in the sensor and the issue is continuing. We are assuming that the new sensor is not damaged. I guess we could have gotten a defective sensor because I cannot think of what else it might be. I appreciate your time, and your past advice has been extremely helpful. Thanks for all you do to help those of us who know nothing about vehicles.
