Hi Scotty!

I got a used 2004 Lexus ES330 (with about 185 k miles) and on the dash the light for the rear tail lights was on. So I check it out and two the rear "corner" lights are out and the license plate lights are out. So I change those and checked all the other rear bulbs and they were fine. I turn the car on, rear tail indicator was off. I thought ok good it's fixed until I stepped on the brake petal and it came back on. So I go check all the rear lights (even the trunk light) and every thing it working as it should be. The rear tail light indicator only come on (and stays on) when I press the brake pedal. I can't figure out why. Since every thing is working its not a big deal but wanting to if you knew what it could be ?

Now I have a bit of mystery which I was never able to figure out. Many years ago I got a used 98 Grand Am Gt (need a car quick do to the car I had before the tranny went out) and drove it for several years. Well one day I was out running errands, went back home shut the car off and was only there for about 5 mins or less and then had to run back out. Went to start the car and it went ca-chunk like the battery was low/dead the rapid clicking. I tried jumping it no good. So I though maybe a bad battery. So I get a new one and that didn't help. A friend of mine said maybe its a bad starter. So I get a new one and still no luck. Then I though well maybe the engine locked up. So then I manually turn the engine via the crankshaft pulley a full rotation and then some. I'm thinking ok this is odd. Doesn't seem like its seized. So I had it towed to near by shop. Told them whats going on and what I tried. The were thinking perhaps the new starter I got was bad. So they get a new one and put it on.

A bit later I get a call and they tell me they got bad news. That new starter didn't work either. They were not totally sure but they think something might have gone wrong in the engine. They said the mechanic was getting "kickback" whatever that means. This shop doesn't go that far in to things (tearing into the engine). Said I can get a second opinion but they think the engine is bad.

I ended up scrapping the car. I was never able to figure what went wrong. Any thoughts on might have been the issue ?

A short, hum. That will be fun to track down, even more so being all the tail lights work as they should, turn signals, reverse , etc.. I'll Just have to live it.

Thanks.

The Lexus sounds like a short. The grand am was probably a blown head gasket or bad intake gasket it was kicking back means the engine was hydrolocking

Yes, yes it was. I'll never own a GM product again. I'm staying with Toyota.

Any ideas about the Lexus tail light indicator ?

Thanks!

it was a shitty GM product and engine broke internally, typical on those crappers. Probably locked up the cam, they are known for that
