Hi Scotty, HEAD GASKET/Engine question. I have a great 2004 Tacoma Prerunner V6 Automatic with 146,000 miles. I’m the second owner and have had it about 9 years. Ive always maintained it and kept it in good condition. During a cross country drive last month (FL to CA) it broke down in Texas. I thought it was the radiator as it was steaming when it broke down. The local mechanic replaced the radiator as it was old and cracked. Turned out it was not just the radiator. Looks like water pump failed, radiator failed and temp gauge did not warn me it was hot and so I blew a head gasket. No idea if there is engine damage inside. There is coolant in oil in dipstick. I put truck on a U Haul trailer and towed it back to California. The mechanic in LA gave me 3 options without looking at it. Rebuild Engine - $3600 Or Remove and replace engine with a used engine they provide, no carfax or warranty on engine -$2800 Or Remove and replace engine with one that I provide - $1000

I have a friend in the car business that can track me down a used engine with carfax, accurate miles and warranty for around $1500

My question is , which is the best option? Or do I just try to sell it as is ? Ive already had a few offers around $3000 as is. I may be able to get more on Ebay. If I put money into it and get it running again I could probably sell it for $6000 to $12000 ? I love the truck and have enjoyed it but would rather sell and get something newer with less miles. Thanks

P.S Just put brand new tires on and had valve cover and intake manifold gaskets replaced before my drive.

I'd just do the headgasket unless the engine is seized should cost around $1,000 to get it done if you can afford it

Your question reveals a lot about you-- I don't think you'd be happy w/ a newer Toyota. I say get an engine, at the best value for your money-- that Seller is willing to Warranty-- read the Warranty carefully!... and then enjoy your handiwork and put another 146,000-mi. on your old, loyal friend.
