Hi Scotty! Do you trust the new Toyota UA80E 8spd transmissions used in the highlander in 2017+ yet? 2mpg better fuel mileage is appealing, but I heard of some Aislin changes mid-2017 already. Deciding between a 2016 highlander w/ old but proven technology (6spd trans) vs 2018+.

Generally I would always go with the tried and true, but I'm considering gambling in this case for two reasons: (1) Gas mileage of 19/25 vs 21/27 is a pretty big difference, (2) There was already a production change by Aislin starting in 2017. See this thread:

So clearly some issues did arise out of the new trans, but after 2-3 years I'm wondering if it might be OK to run with a used 2018 at this point.

I'd go back at least 4-5 years for two reasons: 1/ More on-road time to measure reliability; 2/ Depreciation can run nearly 70% in 4-yrs. Scotty always advises never take a hit like that unless you know you're going to keep it 20-30 yrs. He should know: Scotty has spent $5,500 total on cars for himself in 50-yrs. of car ownership.
