The battery died (or at least got weak enough to trip the error codes). We got the big red triangle and several other trouble lights on the dash, which is exactly the indication that is expected. It happens all the time on older Prius's. The PriusChat forum, which is a huge Prius owners forum, is full of stories. I suggest anyone who is considering a Prius go look there. The batteries will last longer even much longer in cool/cold climates like the Northwest US (Washington, Oregon, along the CA coast). Hot places like Texas (and Arizona, etc) cause batteries to fail sooner. It is simple physics. The heat drives the degradation process. Regular 12v batteries don't make it past about 3 years either in Texas (I have a couple of Honda Accords to attest to that fact). If you are lucky, and you call Toyota directly, you can get sort of a rebate check from Toyota for part of the replacement cost of the battery. I did.

Did the battery malfunction before you replaced it, or did you do it because it ran out of warranty @user456101?

They are really, really good for the first 8-10 years then you can have repairs that cost many thousands - new battery $4,000. New Generator $5,000+. We have a 2008 prius and have had the battery replaced and also the water pump replaced 3 times, at a cost of over $500 each time. Scotty says don't buy a used one. If you are going to buy new and keep it 7-8 years you may have zero problems with it.

But Scotty said that Prius are fine but they cost a ton when they break down . So that is why I am confused. Thanks

Get a Toyota Prius, no ifs, ands, or buts. The Prius is the most reliable car you can buy and they can last over 500,000 miles with no problems other than preventive maintenance every 5,000 miles. Change the oil every 10,000 with synthetic 0W-20 oil and you can go 1-million miles without breaking a sweat.

they can last, though they are kind of cheap rides that make noise and bump a lot. All modern nissans are poorly made compared to toyota or honda. CRVs are good vehices, and priuses are fine until they break down when old then cost a ton to repair
