Hey Scotty, I'm pretty worried about my 'new car'. I bought a 97 Civic DX from a guy at the beginning of this month. It seems to be in pretty good shape, but it's starting to do a weird sputtering thing when letting off the clutch and accelerating. I learned how to drive on a '00 Integra GS-R, and previously owned a manual 99 accord, I'm pretty well adjusted to late 90's honda clutches. When I go to take off from a light, I have to let off the clutch fairly quickly or the car feels like it's gonna stall, kind of jolting a bit. When I try to ease off the clutch like I would in my other cars, it acts up. Normally I'd shift into 3rd right in between 25-30mph when I'm in traffic and want to be quiet. At first I did that just fine. Then I tried to do that while driving on a slight hill. My Civic jolted, stopped accelerating for a split second, then went right back to driving like normal. It's progressively been doing that more, hesitating and bucking because of sudden loss of accelerating; but if I keep my foot on the gas it'll keep going eventually. I know how to drive stick but this car is making me look like a moron! Sometimes I'll downshift back into 2nd or even first and it'll be fine, most of the time I keep giving it gas because I have no idea what else to do. The spark plugs look fine but I'm changing those and the valve cover gasket tomorrow. Already did an oil change and changed the filthy air filter. Could this be a fuel filter issue, some other fuel issue? It looks like it's had header and exhaust work done. Where the exhaust leads into the cat is hanging on by one bolt so it's obnoxiously loud. All my friends have a bet on "what's wrong with the civic". One friend says it's a MAF problem, one says spark plugs, I'm thinking maybe it has a different clutch or tuned gearing I wasn't aware of when buying it, it doesn't have an rpm gauge so I have no idea what I'm revving and why it sputters in low rpms. I'm gonna take it to a mechanic soon but seeing that I work min wage I figured I'd ask here first.
looks decent, put a clutch in it
Clutch is probably going out what's the milage?
