Bad plumbing going in to the car. Hoses, core leaking or a loose hose. Did you smell coolant before it happened? I had a core go in a 72 Malibu. Smelled small whiffs of coolant and noticed the windshield fogged up before it went. It was a fun job in that car and can imagine it being the same for this truck. Pray it's a hose or get ready for a few hours work taking the under dash apart. If you are in a warm climate, by pass it. You wont have heat but wont swim in coolant either.

What is the liquid that spilled? Clogged heater core or hoses if coolant.
