Hey Scotty,
I have a '95 Corolla, 1.8L 5-Speed, car has 286k miles on it. Last week the check engine light came on but shut off about a minute after it came on. A few days later it came on again, but this time it stayed on so I was able to get the light to flash a code for me, and it was Code 71, which from what I know is for the EGR. Interestingly, the check engine light shut off the next time I drove it again, and it's been off since then (it has been 6 days, car was driven 300 miles in these 6 days). I know there must be something wrong with the EGR, because in 1st and 2nd gear, between 900 and 1100 rpm under extremely light acceleration it hesitates as if it's about to stall for just a split second, or having a huge misfire (spark plugs and wires are fairly new).
My catalytic converter has seen better days, and I don't know how clogged it is, but I also don't know if that may or may not have anything to do with this issue.
Other than that specific rev range it runs and idles like a clock. And even in that rev range it only does the hesitation if I'm taking off so slowly that by 900 RPM i'm already off the clutch and fully in gear.
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give you all the info possible.
What is your opinion on this problem? What do you suggest I go about further diagnosing this, or fixing it?
Thank you for your time,
Cristian

Will do, thanks for the advice! I might just delete the CAT altogether as it's leaking where it meets the rest of the pipe, so hopefully that fixes the issue. Maybe that'll give me some power back in the 4k+ rev range

pressure test the cat first as in this video and replace it if bad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJTmddbOxMk&t=1s
