Hey Scotty I have a 242 AMC 4.0L I6 1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ 5-speed AX-15 manual transmission with 214,231 miles on it and I have a check engine light on. To my knowledge the engine has never been rebuilt and neither has the transmission. I’m 19 years old and this is my first vehicle and l will admit I was naive in going to my fullest extent in doing further research of the mechanical work required for vehicles in general when I bought it and the severity of my impulsive nature. I bought it from a private party and the owner was the son of the guy who I was dealing with( the son ‘s father). The father told me going in that it does have a check engine light due to a small leak in the EVAP system and a grind in third gear whenever in high RPM. On November 14, I got the diagnostic codes (P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit, P0463 - Fuel Level Sensor 1 Circuit High, P0442 - EVAP System Medium Leak, and P0133 - O2 sensor 1/Slow Response). Just a few days ago (approximately the 22 or 24th of December) I heard a rattling coming from the engine portion of my Jeep, I looked into it hearing the noise coming from the back of the engine from the point of the grill guard. It is a continuous rattling noise even just idling; it sounds like complete shit, and it only gets worse when accelerate. I started doing my research and according to forums and problems owners have encountered in the past the early ‘97-‘00 are notorious for exhaust manifold leaks. My fuel economy although trash already(15-17mpg), has slightly decreased even further, but I cannot be sure because I know I need a new fuel pump and the fuel gauge fluctuates and gives a misreading. I do lose power when I accelerate and it does take awhile to gain some speed when in high gear and when I climb a bridge or something. I am spitting smoke from the exhaust but not too much. What are your thoughts Scotty? I do have video of the noise and I can get pictures of the codes
