Hey Scotty. I found your videos and they were helpful. I know you don't like VW...it became clear to me. I own a 2004 VW Touareg V6. It has 117000 miles. I've been pretty good keeping with maintenance. The first big problem was 9-10 yrs ago when I had to change the differentials (front & back). The rest has been regular brake pads some recalls that were taken care of. My second major problem came last week. The rear shaft/main shaft needs replacement along with the bearing. The mechanic recommended changing the front/rear shocks (worn out), front lower control arms (bushing ripped), transfer case (output is leaking). I took the car to a second mechanic. The 2nd guy told me the shaft needs to be replaced and to seal the leak in the transfer case. But, the shocks don't need to be replaced yet (not leaking..still ok) and the front lower control arms are ok.
Started shopping for used cars with low mileage here in Florida..15-19 K. New cars 20K and up. Fixing my VW...7K!.
If I don't change the shocks/arms as suggested by mechanic #2...it will cost 2.5K.
So, I am going to fix the car. The engine looks/sounds good. no codes. regular oil change..will do a tune-up. Questions:
- mechanic#1 said that I have to change the shocks because it will kill the new shaft.
- If I continue taking care of the engine with regular oil change and tune-ups. how long this V6 engine will go?
- this is not the main car for a long-distance drive. this the second car that stays in the garage and I use it to go to the grocery store or kids soccer practice.
I will be happy with another 3-5 yrs without getting into a car payment. what do you think? Overall this car has been like a tank..it even saved my life once after a spare tire came out of an RV on 395 hitting my car under it...causing minor damages under the car (crack protective plate under the car).
I becoming a big fan of your channel.
