Hello Scotty, i really need your help here.
i want to buy a cheap and reliable car. Recently I found a 2001 honda civic lx online, it is listed as $1600 with only 10,000 miles on it. I had my mechanic inspected the car, and my mechanic told me i need $2500 of work, timing belt, valve cover gasket, strut, tires, etc. Do you think it is worth to buy this buy? or should i pass on for a newer one or an old corolla?

Get a used Corolla. If you want a Civic, ONLY get one with a standard transmission because Honda automatic transmissions are as weak as Nissan's.

Honda Civic are good cars. However, in this case, putting a lot of work in this car is $1000 more than the car is worth so no it is NOT worth the buy. I would stay away from that car and look for another Honda Civic that has been well-maintained and not abused like this Civic on sale. An old Corolla is also equally a good option like the Civic. In conclusion, you can’t go wrong with either cars, so the choice is yours.
