a/c not kicking on after possible high pressure switch kicked flipping on

a/c compressor not kicking on, possibly from a high pressure switch kicking on from faulty gauge

i'm having issues with my a/c,

my a/c was working ok before so i decided to charge up with refrigerant, and after one can it work a little better (noticeably better). i then decided to add some more but wanted to make sure pressure was still ok to do so. i bought a can from walmart, hooked it up and saw the pressure at 43 so i decided to add some more, and go it to 55. At that point my a/c was COLD- mission accomplished. later on the next day i saw steam coming from the hood after driving a few minutes and when i stopped, i couldnt tell if it was a leak from the line to the condenser or the radiator but it caused my header panel to melt. now my a/c clutch will not engage.

did the high pressure release switch kick on due to to much pressure, maybe a faulty gauge from that walmart can? could it be something else?

so i realized i did not fill the refrigerant correctly, how do i troubleshoot the clutch not engaging, and i have already checked the ground.

NEVER just add refrigerant, this is the ONLY way to fill them right, by weight once emptied
