Hey Scotty, I am working on a head gasket for my 2004 Corolla. Is there any way I can avoid removing the timing chain cover? I have seen people remove the cams but keep the chain tight by tying if off to something above with fishing line, would this be okay to do? I am not pulling the motor so there isn't much room to work. Thanks!
Personal opinion, it's going to be way more work trying to work on the engine while it's sitting in the car, that's just my opinion though...
you can try that with metal wire to hold it in place, but it's not easy. They do it by removing cam gears from cams and then holding it up with mechanic's wire.
