1995 GMC 4x4 454 engine has a delayed starting issue

DJerry

Hello Scotti, I have had a "delayed" starting issue with my 1995 GMC truck for a about 30 days now.

Scotti, I am hoping this is a common issue. My 1995 GMC truck only has a bit over 100,000 miles on it and I have been experiencing a DELAYED start meaning I get in and turn the key and hold the key in the on position for a few seconds before the starter finally turns and the truck starts right up. Once the truck has been started I can shut if off and it will always start right back up but if it sits overnight it is likely to experience the delayed start again BUT not always does it behave this way. I tested the battery voltage it seems okay, I checked that I don't have issues with the cables and connections - I even tapped on the starter thinking it has wear in the starter but just don't think that is the issue. Today I had to hold the key on the on position for almost a full half a minute before the engine actually turned over. I thinking this is a relay issue but I am not much of a circuit troubleshooter and I need to know where to start looking for this issue. Thanks DJerry

generally that's either a weak ignition switch or weak starter motor. Both can be load tested by a pro

Be careful, I’ve heard of leaky injectors flooding a cylinder causing a delayed start like this, and then starting fine after. Maybe not an issue on this vintage engine not sure just be aware it may not be something to just overlook and live with.
