Those of us who can lane split legally in California may take it for granted, but for those of you in the rest of the US, here's some insight from the Motorcycle Legal Foundation and attorney Michael Padway that may be helpful. It's doubtful the other states are going to change their laws to reflect California's any time soon, but there are states out there where the lack of clarity leaves the possibility open.
Mind you, we're not condoning or discouraging the practice. In fact, fellow editor in crime Jim Moore and I have some slightly differing opinions on the subject. (Check out his article about the topic here .) But if you're going to do it, just know your rights in the state you ride in.
